The audience potential which exists in certain countries for subjects such as comic strip, the sea and
mountains, but also for the quality of the Group’s productions, naturally opens doors to the Group in a
certain number of international markets. Among these, Benelux, Switzerland, Canada and Spain are
today the most active. But the rest of Europe, as well as China, are beginning to develop their activities
significantly in this field.
Benelux :
Created in 1985, the Group’s Belgian based subsidiary manages all the Group’s activities in the Benelux
zone : publishing in French and Dutch (8% of turnover), distribution of the Group’s works in French
(67% of turnover) and administration of bookshops specialising in comic strip (25% of turnover).
From an editorial viewpoint, it seeks out and follows Belgian authors for Glénat’s catalogue, and manages
communication (exhibitions, media,...) related to the Belgian, Luxembourg and Dutch public.
Owner and operator of 6 Slumberland sales outlets (Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée, rue St lambert
and Chaussée de Waterloo in Brussels, as well as in Louvain-la-Neuve), Glénat Bénélux represents a
13% market share in the Belgian comic strip bookshops.
The deployment of the Dutch publishing activity (notably for the Manga) and its distribution in the
Netherlands are from now on centres of priority for the evolution of the Glénat Group in this area.
Spain:
Glénat Espagne, created in1993, whose head office is situated in Barcelona, has an essentially
editorial role.
It manages an important Manga catalogue (which represents 40% of the Spanish market), follows a
certain number of local authors (Gimenez, Bernet, Pellejero, De Filipe,….), and publishes the Spanish
versions of items from the Glénat BD and Vents d’Ouest catalogues.
Glénat Espagne is developing strongly, helped by the quality of its collections, and by the Manga
market in Spain and Spanish-America.
Switzerland:
The Group’s Swiss subsidiary was created in 2000, at Nyon, near Geneva. All the Group’s activities are
represented there.
So, it runs the distribution and local promotion of press titles (sea, mountain, and comic strip) and looks
after the follow-up of affairs in this field with local partners (subscriptions, circulation, distribution) or
local institutions.
In the book domain, it manages local distribution of the Group’s titles. At the same time,
Glénat Suisse looks after promotion and communication, assignment of rights, assignment of publishing
(to institutions or Swiss businesses)
Canada :
The distinct francophone interest allows the Glénat Group to distribute its titles in the local market,
drawing on the use of local Quebec teams. This still modest market should see
appreciable development, thanks to publications conceived specifically for Quebec.
Other Countries:
The Glénat Group is today present in a certain number of European and Asian
countries, through the local editions of its products, often produced in association
with local publishers.
