Books about Mountains, the Sea and other themes:
Following the comic strip example, Books, at the centre of the Group, is structured around
strong brand names: Glénat Livres, Libris, Guides Frank, Didier Richard and Chasse-Marée for
books devoted to Mountains and the Sea, and Atlas Livres and Société de Géographie
for other themes.
The Glénat Livres catalogue is characterised by the richness, diversity and quality of its
production. With a base of more than 350 titles, 250 authors in the catalogue, and more
than 40 new items per year, it contains at the same time beautiful books, practical books,
stories, documents, essays, fiction (novel or short story) and biographies. It is based on 4
main publishing axes (Mountains, the Sea, Discovery/Voyage, and Heritage/Style). Three
collections particularly hold the attention : “Montagne et Randonnée” (a leading light
in Glénat publishing, its beautiful, practical books bring real commercial results), “Hommes
et Montagne” (which brings together all the best-sellers in mountaineering literature:
Joe Simpson, Patrick Berhault,…) and “Sillage” (a collection of travel reports, highly
appraised by the critics).
Les Guides Franck, taken on by the Glénat Group in 2002, comprises a base of almost
80 titles, of which 40 were republished by Glénat, in an enhanced version. Really
detailed guides for regional hiking, the Guides Franck constitute a “Classic”, just as much
for occasional walkers as for lovers of rambling.
Editions Didier Richard created in 1924, and whose capital was acquired by Glénat in
February 2004, allows the development of an enlarged catalogue by the Group, in the
field of Trekking and Outdoor Pursuits, thanks to an offering of 300 titles representing
almost 17,000 walking tracks.
The buy-out of Chasse-Marée Publishing by Glénat Group in 2003, has enabled them to
integrate this jewel of maritime publishing. Chasse-Marée has about one hundred titles in
its catalogue.
The Group has also been enhanced in 2002 by a new publishing brand name, the Société
de Géographie. Started thanks to a publishing partnership with the Société de Géographie
(founded in 1821), which has at its disposal a wealth of exceptional original documentation,
and well-known, prestigious members, the Société de Géographie is developing three
top-of-the-range series : Les Grandes Explorations, Des Pays et des Hommes, Aspects
de la terre.
Finally, ATLAS-Livres is developing a multi-theme publishing approach, very much for the
general public, at modest prices. The success of its catalogue is unfailing, notably in the
hypermarket distribution network : sales of the Contes de Marlène Jobert now total more
than 800,000 copies, while almost 500,000 copies of the Atlas Pratique collection have
already been distributed. Other collections (Atlas Nature, Atlas Aviation, Atlas
Géographiques, Majestueux,..) are also met with enthusiasm by the public, and to date
almost 2 million works published by ATLAS Livres have been sold since 1999.
Leader in Mountain publishing, the Glénat Group has become,
with Glénat-Livres and Chasse-Marée, leader in maritime
publishing: from adventure to sailing, to heritage and
maritime culture, passing through diving, animal life or
archaeology, in fact the group productions take in the whole
spectre of the maritime world.
